PURPOSE
To provide print and broadcast journalists in the Gulf and Middle East region with the opportunity to increase the depth and breadth of their reporting on health care, medical and scientific developments.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Through the Science Writers & Journalists Fellowship Program, the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical research will invite three early- or mid-career science writers or broadcast journalists who cover science or medical issues (the “Fellows”), to spend an average of 8 - 9 days at Harvard Medical School to work with the School’s Office of Public Affairs.
The program’s immersion approach will enable the Fellows to interview leading HMS and HMS-affiliated researchers, visit HMS laboratories and see some of the HMS affiliated hospitals and their state of the art facilities.
The Fellows will also meet with experienced Boston-based science writers, journalists and reporters, and discuss the process of transforming scientific research material into a prose or presentation style that will engage a lay readership and audiences and retain accuracy.

ELIGIBILITY
Candidates must:
- be Arab-speaking science writers or journalists, writing or broadcasting in Arabic and / or English
- have at least three (3) years demonstrated experience in writing, reporting or broadcast journalism (radio or television), currently with some focus on medicine, medical research, healthcare or science, and a desire by the individual and their editor to increase their focus on these topics
- be in the early or mid-stage of their career, currently working in the Arabian Gulf and Middle East region
- have a good command of English
- have a degree in writing, communications, journalism or similar discipline or program

REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must submit:
- CV in English
- A personal statement in English of no less than 500 words outlining their ambitions, interests, abilities, and how the Fellowship will help their career
- (writers & journalists) Two recently published articles (in English or Arabic) on a scientific or medical subject
- (broadcast journalists) Two visual samples or audio tapes of their work on a scientific or medical subject, or a visual sample or audio tape of their work, and a written sample of their work on a scientific or medical subject
- A letter of support and endorsement from their senior editor, producer or division head
Candidates will also be interviewed by members of the Foundation staff before the final selection.
Upon completion of the program, the Fellows will provide a full report in Arabic or English to the Dubai Harvard Foundation and to their agency or organization.
The Fellows will also be expected to send the Foundation copies of any articles published or copies of broadcast reports made as a result of the Fellowship within one year of the completing the program.

FUNDING AND LOGISTICS
During the Fellowship period, the Science Writer Fellows will be provided with roundtrip economy airfare between Dubai, or country of origin, and Boston (to arrive no later than Saturday, May 10th, 2008), and hotel accommodation. They will be reimbursed for documented local meal and transport expenses for up to $50 per day.
The Fellowship begins with a day orientation session and dinner on Sunday, May 11th. The program is organized over 5 full workings days, Monday, May 12th – Friday, May 16th:
Day 1: Basic Research & Discovery
Day 2: Clinical Research & Clinical Trials
Day 3: Announcing Medical Innovation
Day 4: Healthcare Policy and Healthcare Access;
Healthcare Quality, Standards and Licensure
Day 5: Specialized and Continuing Medical Education
Each day is divided into 3 parts:
9 am – 2pm: faculty interviews, accompanied by
an assigned HMS staff writer
2 pm – 4pm: writing workshops focusing on
topics covered during the morning
sessions
4 pm – 6pm: site visits to local media outlets, HMS
labs and hospital affiliates

EVALUATION AND REPORTING
Award recipients will be expected to provide a full report, in English or Arabic to both the Dubai Harvard Foundation and the Dubai Press Club at the end of the Fellowship. After the program, the Foundation and the HMS Office of Public Affairs will continue the relationship with the Fellows by keeping them informed about Foundation programs and research fellowship recipients, and HMS research and initiatives of particular relevance and interest to the Middle East. The Foundation will invite them to attend events and scientific symposia held in Dubai, where they will have the opportunity to meet with and interview the presenters. The Fellows are also asked to send the Foundation and the Dubai Press Club copies of any articles published or any reports broadcast as a result of the Fellowship within one year of the Fellowship.
Application deadline: April 4, 2008. Fellowship recipients will be notified by April 11, 2008.

VISA APPLICATION Fellowship recipients will require a B-1 / B-2 Visa for entry into the United States. The Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research will supply all necessary documentation to support a visa application request.
