Building Research Collaborations between Laboratories in the Gulf and Middle East Region and the Harvard Medical Community
The first Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research (DHFMR) Partners in Research conference held on May 10-11, 2007 at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Club in Boston hosted candidates for 2007 Research Center Awards and Fellowship Awards along with their Harvard Medical School counterparts. The event, a part of the Request For Applications process, provided the applicants with an opportunity to present an overview of their current research in front of an audience that included heads of research laboratories from the Middle East and Harvard Medical School. They were joined by members of the DHFMR Scientific Advisory Committee.
The event, chaired by Dr. Robert Thurer, Executive Director of DHFMR, and Chief Academic Officer of the Harvard Medical School Dubai Center (HMSDC) Institute for Postgraduate Education and Research, highlighted the importance of inter-institutional and collaborative research to translate the most recent medical discoveries into effective medical and health practices.
“It was wonderful to see a large number of exceptional scientists from the Middle East and the Harvard Medical School at the event,” said Dr. Thurer. “I was especially pleased with the amount of enthusiasm for the DHFMR sponsored research as well as the development of new technologies that will benefit Dubai, the Gulf Region, and the entire Middle East.”
About the Research Center Awards and Fellowship Awards
Research Center Eligibility Requirements
Collaborative Research Centers or Research Initiatives based at both Harvard Medical School and an academic, research-oriented institution in the Gulf and Middle East Region are eligible to receive funding for collaborative research programs. Under the guidance of the Dubai Harvard Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Committee, “host” centers at HMS will be paired with Middle East research centers with similar interests. These collaborative groups will make a joint application to the foundation for funding. The current level of research at each center should be at a stage that would benefit from a collaborative partnership and approach. The Foundation encourages applications from research centers and initiatives that demonstrate a pioneering approach to basic science research with a strong focus on developing translational research.
Research Fellowship Awards
DHMFR Research Fellowship Awards are designed to support young investigators of outstanding promise from the Gulf and Middle East Region whose work will focus on medical and biomedical research relevant to the advancement of human health. The Foundation intends to support pioneering research and the development of promising new technologies.
The awards are intended to provide support to young investigators or junior faculty at the beginning or early stages of their research career. It is hoped that the support provided by Foundation awards will encourage successful applicants to be innovative in their research endeavors, to publish their research findings and eventually to pursue additional sources of support. It is intended that the Research Award recipients will be matched with one of the Foundation’s Collaborative Research Centers.
