About DHFMR Research Awards
Collaborative Research Center Awards 2007 and Research Fellowship Awards 2007: The Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research (DFHFMR) recently announced its first two multi-year Collaborative Research Center Awards and two post-doctoral Research Fellowship Awards (DHFMR News page).
The Collaborative Research Center Awards 2007 were given to two innovative research collaborations between laboratories and research centers located at Harvard Medical School and laboratories and research centers in the Middle East region. These awards will provide each collaboration with $350,000 per year for up to five years.
Both the Collaborative Research Center Awards and the Research Fellowship Awards are intended to give recipients the flexibility to explore fundamental scientific questions and to lead to a better understanding of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.
NEW AWARDS - DHFMR Research Awards 2008
 |
DHFMR Collaborative Research Center Awards support collaborative initiatives for up to five years between laboratories and research centers at Harvard Medical School and laboratories and research centers in the Gulf and Middle East Region. In December, 2008 DHFMR intends to make additional research center awards at a similar level of funding to those awarded in 2007. To be considered for these awards, the Foundation requests that interested candidates submit a LETTER OF INTENT (further details are below).
Candidate initiatives can be in the early, middle or advanced stages of collaboration and should focus on diseases or health issues that are relevant to the population groups within the Arabian Gulf, Arabian Peninsula and greater Middle East Region.
Successful candidate research initiatives or collaborations should bring novel ideas and new approaches to medical and biomedical research. Proposed research activities may draw upon recent advances in the basic medical and biomedical sciences – including such fields as biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, immunology, molecular biology, and pharmacology - that have the potential to lead to breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of disease.

DHFMR Research Fellowship Awards support independent post-doctoral physician-scientists who are dedicated to basic science or translational research for up to three years. The awards are intended to provide support to young investigators from the Arabian Gulf, Arabian Peninsula and broader Middle East region. They should be at the beginning or early stages of their research career and demonstrate outstanding promise.
It is hoped that DHFMR Research Fellowship Awards will encourage successful applicants to be innovative in their research endeavors, to publish their research findings and eventually to pursue additional sources of support. Research Fellowship Award recipients will be matched with a Harvard Medical School-based collaborator supported by the DHFMR Collaborative Research Center Awards, or with a laboratory or research center located within Harvard Medical School’s research community. Interested individuals should submit a LETTER of INTENT ( further details are below). |
DHFMR Collaborative Research Center Award Eligibility Requirements
DHFMR Collaborative Research Center Awards will support research collaborations between established or developing laboratories and research centers at Harvard Medical School or at Harvard affiliated hospitals, and established or developing laboratories and research centers in the Middle East Region. The research focus should be relevant to the regional population. Each partner laboratory or center should be headed by individuals with a doctorate in medicine, a PhD in medicine or other health related field or in biomedical sciences. Each award will provide support for a maximum of five years.
Candidate programs, laboratories or centers should have outstanding promise as contributors in science relevant to human health. DHFMR encourages Letters of Intent from initiatives that demonstrate an innovative and creative approach to medical or biomedical research, with a strong focus on developing translational research. DHFMR will favor applications that provide post-doctoral training and mentorship opportunities for junior scientists.
These collaborative groups will eventually be invited to submit a joint application to the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research for funding. The current level of research at each center should be at a stage that would benefit from a collaborative partnership and approach. The work of the candidate programs, laboratories or centers should also benefit the development of scientific knowledge and understanding within Harvard Medical School and within the Middle East Region.
DHFMR Research Fellowship Award Candidate Eligibility Requirements
DHFMR Research Fellowship Awards are open to individuals with a MD, a PhD or a MD/PhD in health-related or biomedical sciences. Successful candidates will have demonstrated outstanding performance during their education and training, and will have exhibited promise as potential contributors in science relevant to human health. DHFMR will favor Letters of Intent that demonstrate an innovative and creative approach to medical, biomedical or translational research.
Candidates should be researchers from the Middle East Region, who are working in the Region or considering returning to work in the Region. Research Fellowship Awards will be granted for a maximum of three years; award recipients will be expected to be located at Harvard Medical School for the entire funded period or for significant amounts of time during the funded period to work with senior researchers and mentors. Candidates for Fellowship Awards must be less than 40 years of age on September 1, 2008.
